comporta sits on the sado estuary where the alentejo meets the atlantic — rice fields, cork oaks, low dunes and sixty kilometres of almost empty beach. the light is wide and salt-white, the villages are small and unhurried, and the water is close from almost everywhere. days are for swimming, walking the boardwalks through the marsh, and long lunches that end whenever they end. lisbon is an hour and a half north and feels much further.
