casas na areia began as a fisherman's holiday house in the sítio da carrasqueira, three kilometres from comporta beach. the renovation, by the architect manuel aires mateus, kept the thatch and the sand and let contemporary architecture sit quietly beside them. four low buildings face the estuary and the rice fields, with almost nothing between them and the water.

the first house holds the living area — a fully equipped kitchen, a long wooden table, low sofas, and a floor of sand that is heated in winter. it asks you to walk slowly and stay barefoot. three further houses hold the bedrooms: two simple white volumes with a bedroom and en-suite bathroom each, and one with two connected bedrooms and two bathrooms that can be used together or apart.
